Mrs. Steiner Comments on Osama Bin Laden's Death

With all of the news, articles, hype, twittering and Facebooking about Osama Bin Laden's death, I felt I couldn't go on without my own commentary.  ( I let everyone with their own ideas comment in their own virtual space, and now I am in my own virtual space, please allow me to comment as well.)

My thoughts begin with more of a question.  Why are we celebrating the death of a human being?

Oh yes, Bin Laden was a very twisted, cold and cruel person, but, as evidenced by the fact that he could be killed, he was human.  And what made him cold and cruel were the teachings of his religion.  He wasn't evil for the sake of evil, but for the sake of his beliefs.  Does that make his deeds right? Of course not!  The works wrought under his leadership are nothing short of horrendous, and such criminal acts do deserve justice.

But justice does not necessitate exultation.

Instead, I suggest that justice ought to be performed with appropriate and genuine sobriety.  Realizing that as we bring a human to justice (when justice is necessary), to recall the humanity and mortality of the person.  Especially if we are to call ourselves redeemed children of God.

Obviously Bin Laden has committed in his life sins unspeakable.

But are not all our sins unspeakable?  Are we not all traitors against God?

We all deserve to be hunted, executed and sent to hell.

So why should we long, desire and rejoice in such for another?

Perhaps we should mourn that Osama Bin Laden was most likely never redeemed by the blood of Christ.  Perhaps we should mourn that we shall quite possibly never have the brilliant surprise of seeing Bin Laden in heaven.  Perhaps we should see him not just as a terrorist, but as a lost soul.

Yes, justice was due Osama Bin Laden.

Yes, I am thankful for the military that risks everything to protect our country.

But yes, perhaps we should all retain some gravity in the wake of such justice.

  1. I was thinking along those lines as I looked at a pic of him. "There he is, just a man, and such a lost man. So sad he didn't find the truth."
